About the RoleThe MIT Institute of Design seeks a dynamic and industry-connected Assistant Professor to join the Graphic Design Department. We are looking for an individual who can contribute to our vision of nurturing creative minds in Strategic Design Thinking, Empathy in Social Impact Design, and new-age digital experiences. The ideal candidate will blend strong professional practice with academic excellence to inspire the next generation of graphic design professionals.Key Responsibilities:Teaching and Mentoring Instruction:- Develop and deliver engaging lectures, studio sessions, and workshops for undergraduate and postgraduate students in core Graphic Design subjects. - Core Subjects: Typography & Type Design, Illustration & Photography, Branding & Corporate Identity, Packaging & Print Design, Visual Communication Principles, and Color Theory. - New Media Focus: UX/UI Design Principles, Web Design & Development, Digital Media, and Visual Effects/Emerging Virtual Experiences. - Curriculum: Assist in the development, review, and update of the curriculum to ensure it is aligned with current industry trends and global design standards. - Student Supervision: Mentor students on their projects, portfolio development, dissertations, and internships, ensuring a high level of creative and technical proficiency. - Evaluation: Assess and evaluate student performance through projects, presentations, and examinations, providing constructive and timely feedback.Research and Industry Engagement:- Creative Practice/Research: Engage in research, publications, or creative professional practice relevant to design education and the Graphic Design domain. - Industry Collaboration: Actively collaborate with industry partners to bring live projects, case studies, and consultancy assignments into the classroom, ensuring practical, real-world application of concepts. - Placements: Ensure internships and placements for students by building and maintaining strong industry partnerships.Institutional and Administrative Service:- Committees: Participate actively in departmental and institutional committees and administrative tasks as assigned by the Head of Department. - Outreach: Contribute to institutional growth initiatives, student exhibitions, academic reviews, and design-related events/seminars. - Administration: Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and course materials, and adhere to all university policies.Qualifications- Education: A Master’s Degree (M.Des.) or equivalent in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, Communication Design, or a closely related discipline from a recognized institution. - Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of combined academic (prior teaching experience in a design institute preferred) and/or professional experience in the relevant design domain. - Portfolio: A strong professional portfolio demonstrating expertise in a range of design projects is essential.Required Skills- Design Expertise: Strong command of core design principles, typography, branding, visual storytelling, and human-centered design. - Software Proficiency: Expertise in industry-standard graphic design software, including Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, etc.). - Digital Tools: Proficiency in modern digital design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or similar UX/UI platforms. - Pedagogy: Ability to adopt creative and diverse teaching methods, incorporating design thinking and problem-solving approaches. - Soft Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
