The ideal candidate must possess a strong command of English language, a flair for rewriting and restructuring copy, and the ability to provide clarity, perspective, and depth in news coverage. About the Role The role demands a deep understanding of editorial standards, contextual accuracy, and the ability to ensure factual integrity while adapting content for digital audiences. The person will oversee a team of copy editors, ensuring every piece meets the highest journalistic standards and aligns with Republic’s editorial ethos. Responsibilities Leading the Copy Editors Desk: As the senior person, you will be the final word on editorial copy published on Republic’s English news domain. You will lead a desk of Copy Editors and News Writers to produce impeccable text copy on national and global news events. Editing & Rewriting: Rigorously edit and rewrite copies to enhance clarity, coherence, and accuracy while maintaining a strong narrative flow. Writing to Visuals: Craft compelling text that complements visuals, ensuring content is engaging and aligned with the narrative of news events. Contextual & Analytical Writing: Provide depth and context to news stories, ensuring they are insightful and factually sound. Headlines & SEO Optimization: Write impactful, click-worthy (but not click-bait), and SEO-friendly headlines without compromising accuracy. Editorial Oversight: Lead a team of copy editors, setting quality benchmarks for grammar, syntax, style, and factual integrity. Breaking News Precision: Ensure that breaking news is reported with speed, accuracy, and clarity while maintaining Republic’s editorial standards. You will also have to demonstrate that Breaking News is maxed by way of Editorial angularity and breakout copies, driven by depth and research. Ethical Journalism: Uphold the highest standards of ethical reporting, ensuring zero factual errors or misrepresentation. Collaboration with Reporters & Anchors: Work closely with digital reporters, anchors, and production teams to refine scripts and written content. Fact-Checking & Verification: Cross-check all information to ensure accuracy, eliminating any potential misinformation. Training & Mentorship: Guide and mentor copy editors, enhancing their skills in editing, writing, and digital storytelling. Qualifications Sound editorial judgment and a keen eye for news. A total news junkie with depth of contextual knowledge across Indian and global news events. Exceptional command over English grammar, syntax, and journalistic writing. Strong experience in rewriting and restructuring news copy. Ability to write with depth, clarity, and perspective on fast-moving news events. Adept at writing to pictures and shaping compelling narratives. Strong familiarity with digital platforms, SEO, and audience engagement strategies. Leadership skills with the ability to guide a fast-paced newsroom. Prior experience in digital journalism or a major news network is preferred. Experience - 7 to 12 years
