HSSS - Health , Safety, Security & Sustainability

Job PurposeTo lead and manage all aspects of Health, Safety, Security, and Sustainability (HSSS) within the container terminal operations.Ensure compliance with PSA GHSS standards, statutory regulations, and local port requirements, fostering a strong safety culture, environmental responsibility, and secure work environment to achieve “Zero Harm” and sustainable terminal operations.Key ResponsibilitiesHealth & SafetyDevelop, implement, and maintain the Terminal HSSS Management System in compliance with PSA HSS-MS safety framework & ISO 45001.Conduct risk assessments, HEMP and Hazard control for all critical operations including RTG, QC and yard operations.Monitor and enforce safe work practices among contractors, vendors, and terminal staff.Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and ensure implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).Plan and conduct internal audits, inspections, emergency mock drills, and safety campaigns.Conduct safety training and competency programs for staff, including toolbox talks and refresher courses.Ensure timely reporting of all incidents, near misses, and violations to management and apprise MESA HSSS whenever required.Timely reporting to GHSS, MESA & PSA India HSSS team. Monthly HSSS statistics reporting to PSA Group HSSS on key HSSS indicators.SecurityManage the ISPS (International Ship & Port Facility Security) Code compliance for the terminal.Liaise with Port Authorities, PHO, CISF, Customs, and Police for security coordination and compliance.Oversee access control, CCTV surveillance, patrolling and container seal integrity.Conduct regular security risk assessments and implement countermeasures to prevent unauthorized access and trespassing activities.Develop and maintain Emergency Response and Business Continuity Plans (ERP & BCP).Sustainability & EnvironmentLead Sustainability initiatives aligned with PSA’s 50% emission saving against baseline year.Ensure compliance with pollution control norms.Monitor and report sustainability data; drive reduction projects (e.g., energy efficiency, hybrid RTGs, renewable energy sourcing).Coordinate waste management, water conservation, and biodiversity initiatives.Leadership & GovernanceProvide strategic leadership to the HSSS team, promoting ownership and accountability.Develop and monitor HSSS KPIs; present monthly performance reviews to management.Participate in budget planning for HSSS activities and resource allocation.Serve as the focal point for regulatory inspections (Inspectorate of Dock Safety, TNPCB, DG Shipping, etc.).Promote a proactive and behavior-based safety culture across the organization.Promote a proactive safety culture amongst contractors, suppliers and external port user communitiesAdditional responsibilities:Coordinating and handling of court cases related to IDS and Police.Handling port 3rd party insurance claims – relates to asset and customer container/cargo/vessel damagesQualification & ExperienceEducational Qualification:Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical / Electrical / Industrial) or Science discipline.ME in Industrial Safety Engineering (AICTE approved University).Additional certifications preferred:ISO 45001:2018 Lead AuditorISO 14001:2015 Lead AuditorNEBOSH IGC / International DiplomaSecurity Certification under ISPS Code (PFSO Training)Experience:Minimum 10–15 years of experience in Health, Safety, and Environment functions, of which at least 5 years in a managerial capacity.Experience in container terminals, ports or CFS is mandatory.Proven track record of implementing HSSS systems, training programs, and sustainability projects.Hands-on experience in dealing with statutory bodies and conducting safety audits and investigations.CompetenciesStrong leadership and team management skillsExcellent communication and stakeholder managementProficiency in MS Office and interpersonal skills.Analytical and problem-solving abilityProactive and decisive with attention to detailStrong knowledge of port operations and safety legislationPassionate about sustainability and continuous improvement
