Role Purpose The Quality Engineer – Press Shop is responsible for ensuring consistent quality of stamped sheet metal components by implementing in-process quality controls, inspection systems, defect prevention, and continuous improvement in line with automotive quality standards. Key Responsibilities 1. Incoming & In-Process Quality Control Inspect incoming raw materials: CRCA, HR, GI, Stainless Steel, Aluminium Verify: Thickness, surface finish, coating condition Conduct first-off approval after tool setup or changeover Monitor in-process inspections at presses and fabrication stages 2. Dimensional & Visual Inspection Perform inspections using: Vernier, micrometer, height gauge, dial indicators Go/No-Go gauges Checking fixtures Verify GD&T compliance as per drawings Identify defects such as: Burrs Cracks Wrinkles Springback Surface dents and scratches 3. Process Control & Quality Systems Implement and maintain: Control Plans Process Flow Diagrams Work Instructions Monitor SPC for critical dimensions Ensure process capability (Cp, Cpk) targets are met 4. Problem Solving & Corrective Actions Lead and support: Root Cause Analysis (Why-Why, Fishbone) Corrective & Preventive Actions (CAPA) Coordinate with: Production Tool Room Maintenance Reduce rejection, rework, and customer complaints 5. PPAP & Customer Requirements Support PPAP documentation for press shop parts: Dimensional reports MSA PFMEA Control Plan Ensure compliance with: Customer-specific requirements Automotive standards (IATF 16949) 6. Audits & Compliance Participate in: Internal audits Customer audits Process audits Ensure adherence to 5S, safety, and standard work Maintain quality records and traceability 7. Continuous Improvement Drive scrap reduction initiatives Improve: Tool life Process stability First-pass yield Support new product launches in coordination with NPD Key Skills & Competencies Technical Skills Strong knowledge of: Sheet metal stamping processes Press tools (blanking, piercing, forming) Drawing reading & GD&T Quality tools: APQP PPAP PFMEA SPC MSA Measurement instruments & checking fixtures Behavioral Skills Strong observation and analytical skills Shop-floor problem-solving mindset Effective communication with operators & engineers Attention to detail and discipline in documentation Education & Experience Qualification: Diploma / BE / BTech in Mechanical / Production Engineering Experience: 2–5 years in press shop quality (Automotive preferred) Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) Press shop rejection rate First-off approval success Customer complaints related to stamping PPAP right-first-time approval Scrap & rework reduction Audit non-conformities (zero major NCs) Preferred (Added Advantage) Exposure to: Progressive tools High-tonnage press lines Experience with: Powder coating / CED pre-press inspection OEM / Tier-1 customer interaction experience
